Seaweeds are mysterious. They inhabit an underworld that we rarely witness and will never belong to – wild, untended gardens of the sea.
They are ancient – fossil studies have revealed them to be over one billion years old and responsible in large part for the creation of our atmosphere.
And they are incredibly important – algae generate more than half of the oxygen in the air and store massive amounts of carbon.
I work in absolute collaboration with the beautiful algae and flora from the coast of Maine. They literally imprint themselves life size onto watercolor paper or canvas murals through the cyanotype process as the Elements, especially the heat and UV rays from the sun, water, and wind develop their likeness.
