WHAT ONCE WAS

The weirs, smokehouses and abandoned outport fishing communities are all symbols of a time before – a recent time when our oceans were bountiful and full of fish.

A tangible element of time is embedded in this work as the images were made with long exposures, incorporating the passing of time directly into the image.

I worked with historic photographic processes for this project for their inherent beauty and because they suited the subject. These images were made the same way they would have been when the fish were plentiful and the smokehouses were the heart of the community.
